We provide advanced driving courses in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and all of the UK. Our advanced driving courses in Cambridge do cover a wide range of roads. Cambridge is known to be one of the most congested cities in the UK, which is mainly down to a poorly designed road network, which can’t really cope with today’s traffic levels – as is the case with any older towns and cities.

The A14 is a popular location for us to provide at least some part of an advanced driving course in the Cambridge area, as is the M11 for the motorway training element. Cambridge has a very high level of cyclists, so, during urban driver training, we will help a driver become more aware of these at-risk road users, through forward planning and improved mirror use – key elements of advanced driving. We also provide training on many rural routes in and around Cambridge and Cambridgeshire.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Cambridge

Cambridge is a famous city located on the river Cam in the east of the UK in Cambridge county, and it is served by the nearby M11 motorway, which brushes the city’s western side and the A14 to the north.

The M11 links London to Peterborough from the M25, and as it passes Cambridge, there are several areas of concern, such as the intersection junction 11 of the A10, where numerous collisions are noted due to possible poor lane exiting. Further along at junction 12, the story is very similar, where the intersection meets the A603; many crash sites are seen here, and speeds leading to the exit may be too high or too slow.

Understanding the regulations of motorway driving is vital if you are using them to remain safe. When meeting a junction exit on a motorway, there is always the possibility of a driver moving across lanes, panicking that they may miss the exit, which can be disastrous, so you must be not only looking at your own directions but paying extra attention to the drivers around you. Junction 14 is where the M11 meets the A428, merging into the A14, and this is also a pretty challenging junction with several severe accidents noted. Again, good directions and observations are needed to navigate significant urban interactions such as these. As the A14 travels across the north of Cambridge, many accidents are noted from the M11 between junction 31 and 32. This could be because it is a tiny patch of dual carriageway, and the speed is higher than expected for the drivers joining. The A14 continues to be problematic along the whole route throughout Cambridge, with the meeting of the A10 and Milton Road being especially high.

Although the retail centres of Cambridge are pedestrianised, the surrounding streets are bustling and shared with public transport routes and are often one-way systems such as Downing Street and Corn Exchange. There are numerous collisions noted around the centre of Cambridge. Although many are (mostly) less severe due to lower urban speeds, they can result in road closures and can add to already congested streets and costly insurance claims. St Andrew’s Street is very high in accident statistics, which are often found around the traffic light and road crossings; driving in busy urban environments requires patience and good observation, especially during rush hour traffic, and care should always be taken in such areas.

This is only a minimal outline of collision sites in Cambridge. If you have any specific roads you travel on in the area and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions, don’t hesitate to contact us. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested.
