Suffolk is a rural county which offers a fantastic network of challenging rural roads, which are great for advanced driver training. If you require motorway driver training and are based in Suffolk, we usually recommend a full day so we can head south towards the M11 and M25.

However, with most of our advanced driving courses, we try and cover as wide a range of roads as possible. In Suffolk, we provide training on roads such as the busy A14 and A140. For more rural road training where car control and various advanced/defensive techniques can really be mastered, we use a range of A and B roads. Training is based around you – regardless of your level of experience.

Remember – Each driving course is totally bespoke to your own specific needs and requirements. This applies to both our business and private client courses.

We have provided driver training for both private and business clients in Suffolk, in areas such as Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft, Ipswich and Haverhill. We do cover all of Suffolk, as we do all of the UK. Suffolk is just one area where we have universal coverage. Depending on your location, we often head out north into Norfolk or west into Cambridgeshire. Due to traffic, we usually don’t head too close to London, unless you are specifically looking at motorway training. Using a variety of roads is key when it comes to providing an advanced driving course for our clients, whether that be training for one or several hundred.

During our advanced/defensive training, we try and cover a wide range of things, including:

  1. Creating increased powers of anticipation and planning
  2. Being aware of speed limits and controlling your speed
  3. Improving a driver’s overall attitude to driving on UK roads
  4. Safer driving on motorways, rural roads and in the town
  5. Educating drivers about the rules of the road
  6. Better understanding the reasons for road rage
  7. Manoeuvres

Road Safety Risks and Information – Suffolk

Suffolk is a very rural and coastal county located in the Southeast of the UK and does not have any dedicated motorways, but several fast A road routes that link the main towns of Lowestoft and Ipswich to the nearby counties of Essex, Cambridge and Norfolk. For the size of the county, the accident rate is relatively low, but this is because roads are widely distanced. The main routes in Suffolk still carry very severe collision statistics, much the same as some busy coastal and rural roads.

The A12 travels through Suffolk from Colchester, circling Ipswich, and onto Lowestoft; the first area of concern is where the London Road interchange joins near Chapel St Mary to the Junction of the A14 or straight into Ipswich via the A124. This very short stretch of road has many severe accident sites, and caution should always be applied when driving this route. The A12 then leaves the A14 from the east of Ipswich and follows the coast up to Lowestoft. Many accidents occur within a few miles of Ipswich along the A12 near Brightwell and Martlesham; this area is highly populated with housing estates and minor roads linking to the fast A road route. Once the A12 becomes more rural, the accidents become further apart, but they are still widespread when minor roads cross, such as the B119 at Saxmundham and the Middleton Road at Yoxford.  If you intend to travel along unfamiliar routes, then it is wise to look at where the potential accident hotspots are to make sure that you stay as safe as possible.

The A14 is another fast A road route that travels through the centre of Suffolk from Newmarket, through Bury St Edmonds, skirting Ipswich and ending in Felixstowe. It is littered with numerous collision sites, a number of which are sadly fatal. Junction 37 joins the A142, and Junction 38 joins the A11 from Newmarket are both areas of concern with many serious crash sites. Another accident hot spot to be aware of is around the Newmarket Road junction 41, where several accident sites are very close together.

Along the Coast in Suffolk, the worst affected areas for accidents are found from Saxmundham into Aldeburgh along the B1121, and the probability of drivers unfamiliar with the area being involved is very high due to the coastal location. Another area to take caution is Lovers Lane near Kenton Hills. The roads in and around Lowestoft are very similar with regard to accident rates, which are much higher in the summer months, once again showing that drivers who are unfamiliar with the area sadly come to the most harm. Understanding the accident hot spots for your journey will always help you stay safe on the road.
