In the last 10 years, we have provided advanced and defensive driving courses to companies and private individuals in Staffordshire, including Stoke, Cheadle, Stafford, Cannock and Leek. Being a national driving course provider, we can provide training in any location in the UK. With training that is scheduled to start in Staffordshire, we have a wide range of roads to conduct the training.

The M6 runs through the county, and a wide range of A-roads, such as the A53 and A518, provides a varied experience for driver training. We often head west into Shropshire during a course, using the A518 or A53, or depending on your location, we can head south into the West Midlands, or even east into Derbyshire. The routes we take on an advanced driving course is designed to provide the very best learning experience for you.

Remember – Each driving course is totally bespoke to your own specific needs and requirements. This applies to both our business and private client courses.

Our courses are bespoke to the needs of the driver, and so with one course, we may focus on motorway training, and with another, we may spend more time on rural road driving.

During rural road training, we place emphasis more on car control and how to deal with varying road surfaces, corners, and (often) hazards like mud on the road, blind entrances and farm machinery.

During an advanced driving session we typically look at:

  1. Forward planning and observation
  2. Speed awareness
  3. Developing a positive attitude towards safer driving
  4. How to become a safer driver on all roads
  5. Car or van control (gears, steering, foot controls, signals)
  6. Rules of the road
  7. Dealing with road rage
  8. Reversing and manoeuvres
  9. Dealing with adverse weather
  10. Town and urban defensive driving
  11. Driving in heavy traffic and allowing adequate space
  12. Skid control theory and learning what causes skids
  13. Eco-safe driving (effective use of speed, gears, planning)
  14. Anticipation – Learning to see and not just look
  15. Understanding other road users and their intentions

Road Safety Risks and Information – Staffordshire

The M6 and the M54 motorways and several fast A road routes such as the A5, A34, A51 and A38 serve Staffordshire. All of these routes are littered with many severe and often fatal collision sites throughout the entire county, and it is beneficial to know where the worse hot spots are located if you intend to travel across Staffordshire.

The M6 joins Staffordshire at Essington, which also links the M54 at junction 10a, and several serious accidents have been noted at this junction. Further along, northbound is the challenging M6 toll junction where it links the A460, and numerous accidents have happened around this point, especially on the sizeable multilane roundabout; this could be a result of poor positioning for lane exiting, which is disastrous on hectic motorway junctions. Although several severe accidents are noted further along the M6, the next area of paramount concern is the run-up to Junction 13 and the intersection of the A449. Numerous collision sites exist here, and extra caution should be applied when driving there. There will always be unexpected, unavoidable accidents. Still, statistics show that more accidents will occur anywhere that there is a joining of other routes, via roundabouts, traffic lights or slip roads, so once this is ingrained in your driving habits, you will pay extra attention near these areas you will give yourself a better chance of staying safer on the road. The M54 from Telford across the M6 has plenty of accident sites, which have occurred along the entire length showing that it is a hectic route and care should be taken.

The A41 is a busy and fast road route that runs across Staffordshire between Wolverhampton and Newport in Shropshire, it is rural in areas and quite winding; several severe accidents have occurred along this route. The A5 crosses Staffordshire from Telford through to Tamworth and carries the highest number of accidents in the county as it has a high traffic volume. The Four Crosses near Chase Park are particularly hazardous, as are the challenging junctions joining the Walsall Road and the A460. The A5 gets a little riskier as it travels towards Tamworth as the fast road becomes more winding from Muckley Corner, and the collision rates rise drastically. The A38 is a very long route that travels from the west of the UK, and in Staffordshire, it links Brownhills to Burton on Trent, it crosses some very rural areas, and collisions often occur when minor lanes cross the faster routes. The A53 from Market Drayton to Stoke on Trent carries a huge volume of traffic, with numerous collision rates. Also, it covers a large rural area and is a winding road where crossing minor roads and too much speed have been fatal in too many cases.

In the more rural areas of Staffordshire, the collision rates are more spread out, but they are far more severe when they do happen. The roads around the village of Cheadle are very hazardous, with numerous severe accidents in a very small area, and this is similar across the county.

These are only a very broad outline of collision sites in the county. Please contact us if you have any specific roads you travel on in the area and are keen to discover what parts are at higher risk of collisions. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone who is interested.
