Road Safety Risks and Information – Kent

Kent is an extremely busy county that contains the port of Dover and many coastal locations along with bustling towns such as Maidstone and Royal Tunbridge Wells. Kent has a lot of commuter traffic due to its close location to London and is served by many fast A roads and three motorways, the M2, M20, and the M26 leading to the M25 London Orbital route.

The M20 running from Swanley to Folkstone has seen many severe and sometimes fatal collisions involving multiple vehicles, and between junctions 9 and 11a toward Folkstone, have seen the most problems. The M2 that links the A2 and the A229 is also fraught with fatalities for such a small stretch of road, and the most affected spots are around the junctions. It is always wise to be aware of accident hot spots when navigating a regular or new journey, as extra caution can be lifesaving. There is a challenging intersection to join the M25 London Orbital motorway as it also filters traffic from the A21 – it is the junctions where most collisions are found.

The A2 and the A256 to and from Dover suffer exceptionally high collision rates; this could be due to drivers who are unfamiliar with the roads if departing the port of Dover; these accidents will also include more haulage vehicles and possibly foreign drivers. The A2 brings a lot of tourist traffic from London to the coastal towns of Margate and Broadstairs via the A28, and the stretch of road between Canterbury and Sarre has seen the highest rate of casualties. The A21 links the M26 to Hastings, another busy route, especially during the summer. The A229 from Staplehurst to Wilsley Green is also another accident hot spot. The busy town routes through Folkstone, the Cherrington Road linking to the A259, have seen far too many urban collisions, and the A20 leading to the port in Dover is also rife with accident spots.

Kent is both rural and coastal in parts and has a high tourism industry in the summer months, with many second homeowners from London commuting at weekends year-round. The roads linking Hearne Bay, Westgate on Sea, Margate and Ramsgate are fraught with severe crash sites involving multiple vehicles. This is a similar story to the roads towards the Isle of Sheppey and the A249.

We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested in discovering accident hot spots in Kent, as this is just a very small outline. Please do get in touch with us.
