Cornwall is a popular location for our advanced driving courses. Roads in Cornwall are challenging, mainly because most of them are rural roads, which by their very nature tend to require greater driver skill. Sadly rural roads are more dangerous than main roads and motorways, this is mainly due to the often high speed of oncoming traffic, combined with twisty roads, and no separation between you and on-coming traffic. They are more likely to have unplanned hazards on too, such as mud on the road, black ice and broken road surfaces.

Our advanced driving courses help make you safer on these roads, by increasing your powers of forward planning and anticipation, along with improvements to your car control.

Remember – All our on-road driving courses are tailored to your exact requirements. For both business and private clients.

We have helped many private and business clients in Cornwall with training which ranges from corporate training sessions for business clients to motorhome and car training for private individuals. We have provided training in Falmouth, Truro, Redruth, St Austell, Newquay and Bodmin. We cover all areas of Cornwall and come to you for the training.

In terms of routes we take for the training, we regularly use the A30 as this spans the county of Cornwall, along with other A-roads, and plenty of B-roads too. If you are looking for motorway training and are located in Cornwall, we would recommend a full day, where we would head on out to the M5 in Devon towards Plymouth.

Road Safety Risks and Information – Cornwall

Cornwall is a highly popular location for holidaymakers from across the UK, and from April until October, the fast A road routes, town centres, and minor B roads and lanes are extremely busy. Cornwall has many busy towns, with Truro being the capital City of the county, and these are highly populated with local businesses and bustling communities.

The main routes into Cornwall are the M5 starting in the Midlands, merging into the A30 right through to Penzance, and the A390 from Minehead in Somerset, running via the coastal route in the west through to Newquay. These fast roads have been notoriously dangerous, and the stretch of the A30 between Blackwater and St Ives has seen more than average fatalities and multiple collisions. Another hazardous area is the A39 between Wadebridge and Davidstow and the A395 from Davidstow to Launceston. Although Cornwall does not have motorways as such, it is crucial to use the fast A30 and A39 routes as if they were. The A30 is notorious for traffic jams in high season, especially the travellers trying to get to the very bottom of Cornwall. When considering a long journey into Cornwall, you must be well prepared, with plenty of fuel and refreshments, as it is not unknown that hours can be added to a journey due to traffic flow hot spots, with very slow moving, sometimes less than 5 MPH, traffic to deal with.

Cornwall has hundreds of rural and coastal routes with often some very narrow single-track lanes to navigate, which can be very busy in the summer. There are also a lot of farming communities spread throughout rural Cornwall, so it is not unknown for traffic to be held up with tractors as much as caravans and motorhomes. It is essential to understand that most traffic encountered in Cornwall will be with drivers unfamiliar with their route, so extra care must be given in all directions. The A390 at St Anne’s Chapel has seen some very severe accidents involving multiple vehicles with, sadly, a number of fatalities. The A3083 from Helston The Lizard has also been littered with severe and fatal collisions.

This is only a very short outline of collision sites in the county. If you are keen to discover which of your routes are at higher risk regarding collisions, please contact us. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested.
