Bedfordshire has a wide range of roads that we can provide driver training on, A-roads such as the A6, A428 and the A421 are popular routes we take. There is also a wide range of rural B roads in Bedfordshire, which are popular as it allows us to help drivers with forward planning, observation and car control, which are critical on all roads types, but especially on rural roads, which are typically higher risk than others. For urban driver training, which helps drivers with managing lower speeds, and becoming more aware of cyclists and pedestrians we often head info Bedford, and drive in places like Fenlake, Green End or similar, depending on traffic at the given time.

For motorway training, we use the M1, which runs to the south of the county. We often head out of Bedfordshire on a training course, sometimes over towards Cambridge, or across to Northampton area.

The personal advantages of our advanced driver training can include:

  • Increase your levels of skill and overall confidence
  • Remove any at-risk or even dangerous driving styles
  • Consider issues that may be specific to your own driving style

Road Safety Risks and Information – Bedfordshire

Bedford is at the centre of the very busy county of Bedfordshire and links Milton Keynes, Cambridge and Northampton with fast A roads and the A1 motorway lying at the east of the county. There are also many miles of rural roads throughout the county, linking the many smaller towns and villages.

Road risk studies over the past several years have given a better insight into where the most hazardous roads can be found, and unfortunately, Bedfordshire has more than its fair share of issues. The fast routes towards the A1 motorway throughout Bedfordshire, such as the A14 from the Midlands, through Kettering and Thrapston, have seen countless fatal accidents involving multiple vehicles at times. The A421 linking Bedford and the A1 from the M1 at Milton Keynes, junction 13, is another perilous route, especially near the intersection around Bedford where the A6 and the A5141 join. The M1 between Northampton and Milton Keynes has many accident sites, especially the junction at Newport Pagnell services and the meeting of the A421 at Bogborough, where you need to cross over the M1 at junction 13.

In the more rural parts of Bedfordshire, there are some particularly dangerous routes, the B1042 towards Cambridge, including the villages of Sandy, Potten and Tadlow, and the A600 and the B658 linking Bedford to Shefford have seen over the average serious accident numbers. It is vital that rural driving regulations are respected and understood, especially when there are few speed cameras. Another hazardous area is the minor routes between the A45 and the A6 and the villages of Wollaston, Podington and Rushden.

The busy towns and cities in Bedfordshire have high urban accident rates, and as seen throughout the county, the majority of accidents happen during rush hours and around traffic light junctions and roundabouts. The A603 and the A1134 ring roads in Cambridge are very hazardous, with hundreds of serious accidents and some fatal. Milton Keynes Centre is similar, especially the newer routes such as Standing Way, with many roundabouts and junctions to navigate; the intersection of the A5 to the A509 and Portway is another area to take extra care when driving these routes.

These are only a small outline of the many collision sites in the county. If you have any specific roads, you travel in the area and are keen to discover what areas are at higher risk of collisions. Please get in touch with us. We offer a free-of-charge service to anyone interested.
