This has been mentioned previously, albeit without a lot of dicussion:

I think the idea was published by Michelin as early as 2005. Doesn't seem to have gotten very far though, I think if I remember correctly it was going to be used on buggies, etc first before being adopted on road cars. It'd be interesting to see which bits are a consumable and how this would compare to the cost of tyres today.

This would be boon for us ADIs. No more split tyres. No problems with having a space saving spare as car is not allowed on test with a space saver as the candidate would not be able to drive up to the NSL where safe.

My previous car, a Peugeot 206 had a space saver. Considering that the spare was in an adjustable cradle under the boot, seems a rediculous idea. I got around this by purchasing two new full sized steel wheels that were from a vehicle that had the original wheels changed for a set of alloys.

Ah but a space saver is also a weight saver! Perhaps the full size spare was the last piece of weight Mr Peugeot needed to lose to get your 206 into a lower CO2 tax bracket.

Not in Nov 2000 as cars registered before Jan 2001 did not qualify for the lower tax bands :x

Ah, indeed. Thinking about it, my Supra has a space saver spare wheel too. And it was registered before Jan 2001 so it did not qualify for the higher tax bands either
