Glad to hear you enjoyed your half day with Clive Jones. This is something I will have to get around to one day. Your comment about only observing mid ground is something that is common to most drivers. In fact some don't even look that far ahead.

I would hazard a guess that you were probably taught that by an ADI. Why some ADIs teach that you must stop before engaging 1st beats me. I had a pupil who had been taught to stop before engaging 1st by a previous instructor. This came to light approaching traffic lights on her first lesson with me. A few feet from the line and the lights change from red to red/amber. We were too slow for second but could continue as the lights would be green by the time we got to the line. With a closely following vehicle, braking to a full halt would be dangerous.
