Funnily enough the lights have been flashing furiously for the last two days. Not sure if they've been activated manually or their sensors think somethings happened?

On the M90 they trialed a system with flashing posts on the hard shoulder, about 100m apart. Never seen them anywhere else though. Big Err should be able to give more info on them

It's funny this should come up now, I was just coming on here to ask about it. I drove past these as they were flashing away a couple of days ago during my first ever time driving in Scotland and wondered what the hell was going on. I thought that, unbeknown to me, the Scotish Parliament had recently enacted some new road traffic laws and published a Scotish Highway Code explaining what flashing roadside safety posts were meant to signify.
