To the average driver 'safe' is not having accidents. To an advanced driver 'safe' is not being vunerable to an accident.

Thnaks ROG, I think an important thing is that you have a least some understanding of why we use advanced techniques rather than just being able to drive using them.

An ability to draw out the associate, to listen to them, and to understand where they are coming from.

On a drive with an associate, what you would be doing right now? - is the associate doing it?
YES - praise
NO - decide when would be a good time to discuss

Yes, I would have liked that, even if it can sometimes be a bit tricky for the Observer. Smile

It is greatly to the credit of Observers who can do that.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I'm going to add my two penn'orth as a trainee observer . . .

You need to be able to explain concepts clearly and deliver criticism sensitively, especially to people who are very touchy about their driving. Also good to be able to say, "I don't know" sometimes and direct the associate to someone who will.

On a less serious note, you need to be able to periscope your right eye out on a stalk so you can get a clear view of the speedo while simultaneously using the left to observe whether the driver is spotting hazards ahead that you would spot Very Happy
