I have just read a fascinating book "Driving is More About Psychology than Systems" by John P. Brown, a "Specialist Teacher and Disability Driving Instructor".
It includes much from his personal experiences and I highly recommend it to all Instructors / Observers / Tutors (I/O/T) and everyone who teaches, works or lives with anyone with a disability, whether mental or physical.
It will "ring bells" with many I/O/T's and give us all ideas on variable approaches. One quote is "If he does not learn the way you teach, can you teach the way he learns?"
To avoid resurrecting the debate on Instructing/Observing/Tutoring, volunteer Observers and Tutors should obviously change "teach" to "guidance".

It's an excellent book - in a lot of ways more 'accessible' than Mind Driving' (although it's not an 'either/or' - read them both!).

It also reminded me of what I was told in an instructor training session about 20 years ago:
"You are not here to teach - they are here to learn"
Written on the blackboard, and I think most of us looked and read without true understanding. _________________ http://www.teaselart.co.uk/ garden art gifts for fences patios decks walls trellis - Inspired by Mackintosh, Celtic Art, Warhol, Chinese lettering, etc. Ideal for Christmas presents!
