Techie query for webmaster - viewing messages

Hi

I've been using the private message facility and wondered if there is a way to view the original message (and subsequent ones) whilst writing the response? For example, as when replying to a main forum topic you can see the running thread of other people's responses.

I think the only way to do that is to open a new window for each - but I'm no expert
