|
|
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wiltshire/7506689.stm
"The move follows a shake-up of speed camera funding rules which mean the Treasury keeps proceeds of fines and then makes road-safety grants to councils."
So is it a sudden outbreak of common sense, or simply a ploy from the council to get some of their money back?

I know which I'm more likely to believe
It wasn't clear from the article, but do you know if this was specifically fixed cameras or both fixed and mobile units?

| I don't think it's clear. I heard a brief interview on Radio 4 this morning too. On one hand they talked about alternative measures such as traffic calming/flashing reminder signs being more effective - which suggests fixed locations, but I guess they could still do this at places where mobile units have been sited. I think I'd rather have the camera vans than a new rash of speed humps. |

As I understand it the Treasury only takes the excess.
If LAs get to keep the excess, as they do with parking fines, then there is naturally an incentive to issue more. |

Yes it's good to see some debate again - it's only a proposal and they are 'considering' it.
Chap on BBC morning TV news mentioned Safespeed and how he (Paul Smith) had consistently argued against Speed Cameras - he then went on to say what was needed was more driver education (hurray). _________________ Martin - Bristol IAM Group Senior Observer and Secretary. |

We had Margaret Tester to speak to our RoSPA meeting last night - seems she escaped in the nick of time
She seemed a very sensible person, but I would have enjoyed asking her about this. Shame. _________________ Nick

So long as they don't tell you to slow down when you're doing about 28 on a very clear straight road with a speed limit of 30 as happened to me a few weeks ago. The powers that be have since adjusted it, to be fair, and I no longer trigger it on the occasion I go past it at the speed limit. _________________ David

We have the same on our estate - regularly go off when doing an indicated 30 or less. The upshot of this seems to be most drivers just ignore them and carry on at 40+mph. I don't understand why they are calibrated at exactly the limit - if they went of at say 2-3mph over it, drivers looking at their speedo (and seeing say limit+5mph) might accept they are going too quickly and slow down, instead of treating the signs with contempt ("well if they go off even if I'm doing 30, why bother doing 30 at all?") |
